Career Information Systems

Students this week will be completing a week program CIS:

The Oregon Career Information System (CIS) provides a system of occupational and educational information to help Oregonians learn about the world of work and education.   CIS helps students with the process of career planning or career transition. The information that Oregon CIS develops is comprehensive; for example:

• Current employment, wages, outlook, hiring practices, preparation, and licensing, in addition to the skills, abilities, and knowledge required, are reported for each of over 600+ occupation titles. These occupations cover over 95% of the labor market in Oregon.
• Every postsecondary program of study or training offered in Oregon is described within one of over 600 program categories. More than 150 topics of information, from admission requirements and costs to services for students with disabilities, are provided for each postsecondary school in Oregon. Similar information is included about national two-year, four-year, and graduate institutions.
• A complete scholarship and a financial aid database that lists national, state, and local awards is available along with a tool to sort the entries based upon an individual’s characteristics.
• CIS also includes information about self-employment, job search, industries, and the military as an employer.

The information is also delivered in a systematic way. This means that each information file is linked to other relevant information to create an integrated system of career information. Professional information analysts collect, analyze, review, and edit every piece of information in CIS each year. They use a wide variety of data sources and generate additional information from their own questionnaires. Oregonians can be certain that each piece of information and the links between the various information files have been thoroughly researched with the concerns of the career planner in mind.

CIS was built to remove barriers so that Oregonians can create accurate and actionable career and education plans. CIS is a time-tested, Oregon-grown system of the highest quality, integrity, and value. Self-supporting for over 40 years, Oregon CIS served as the model for the creation of all state CIDS nationally.

Week of 26th -30th

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday students have been, and will be working on a current events article in class. The article is about "Vampire Burials" from Ancient Rome. Students will be completing a worksheet package that will include a map activity, summary paragraph, a personal response to the article and a citation list.

On Thursday, students will be taking a formative assessment on Ancient Rome. Th assessment is two part, and will contain a mapping activity and a vocabulary part. Students should be accessing the practice quizlet in preparation for the assessment.

Finally on Friday, we will be looking at Hannibal, the Punic Wars and the expansion of the Roman Empire.

This week.....

We have a big week ahead this week....

Monday we will be looking at the History of the Olympic Games,and see how it has changed since Ancient Greek times when the games where first started. Students will read an Article in Newsela and complete the quiz in google classroom.

Tuesday, students will be introduced to an "I Choose" book where they follow the story path of either a Spartan or Athenian during Ancient Greece. These books will be available until the end of the week, for students to try alternative 'paths' in the book. We will also play our first QUIZLET LIVE as a group. Quizlet link

Wednesday is a formative assessment on their Country/City chant. Quizlet link

Thursday we will be conducting a debate on the Parthenon Marbles. Should they be returned to Greece, or kept in the British Video (here is a short video for background)

Friday, brings an end to our unit on Ancient Greece, with a assumptive assessment.

Alexander The Great

Today and tomorrow we are examining the rise to power of Alexander the Great and his expansion of the Greek Empire.
The first part of the lesson will examine his rise to power and his conquests, while the second part we will examine him as both a hero and a villain.

Students will have a Newsela Article due on Friday examining Alexander the Great.

Period 5, 6, 7: JUDGE RAVASSIPOUR

Today students in Periods 5,6 and 7, will be introduced to the "Rule Out' program, led by Circuit Court Judge Ravassipour.

                

The Rule Out Program is a pilot program to engage our youth with the local justice system.  The program entails a Circuit Court Judge meeting with seventh grade classrooms to discuss the Bench’s perspective on issues of substance abuse, social media and drugs.  The objective is to raise awareness in our youth and provide access to our justice system in an environment that lends itself to open dialogue.  Children have the power of choice – to choose their path, to choose who they want to be and to rule out the obstacles that can get in their way.

                After each seventh grade class has been visited, the school will host an evening panel of professionals including the judge, a prosecutor, a public defender and a law enforcement officer to answer questions and concerns of parents.

GREEK CULTURE

Today we will look at some of the cultural achievemnts of the Ancient Greeks. In particular we will look at EPIC's, poems such as HOMER"S ILIAD and ODYSSEY; we will examine AESOP and his FABLES, and briefly introduce MYTHS.

SPARTA and ATHENS

For the next two days we will be studying two of the Greek City States: Sparta and Athens. We will do a comparison of each of them and then take a look at how Greek Democracy is different to democracy in  the USA.

TEST DAY

Today students took their second test on the Country/City chant. This is another formative grade leading towards a Summative grade at the end of the year, once we have covered the complete list of countries and cities.
Once they had completed this they logged onto Newsela and read an article about the first Greeks, the Minoans and the Mycenaeans.

ANCIENT GREECE

Yesterday we started our Unit on Ancient Greece. We will be first studying the Geography of Greece, to do this we accessed prior knowledge of Ancient Egypt (a 6th Grade standard) and looked at Political, Climate, Precipitation, Population and Topographic maps. Today we will look at similar maps of Greece and make predictions about trade and agriculture in Ancient Greece.

 Final summaries and opinion paragraphs MUST be submitted in Google Classroom by tomorrow (Tuesday 11:59pm)

Current Events Article #1

For the next two days students will be analyzing an article on Newsela (This great website allows students to adjust reading level to fit their needs). After reading the article, we will be completing a template to get the 'gist' of the article, and then students will be creating a written summary and response to the article.
We will be doing several of these Current Events articles over the year, each one being a formative assessment, with the last one in the 4th quarter being a summative.

European Country/Capital City Quiz

Today students will be taking their first formative assessment on their European Country/Capital City Chant.
 Once we have completed the assessment, we will have some more students present their Bio Posters.

Bio-Poster

Congratulations to those students who got their Bio-posters in yesterday. Most of these students got to present their posters to their class, and are now being displayed in our hallways. Well done TEAM 7.1'derful!!!

FINAL ASSEMBLY OF BIO-POSTERS

Today students finally put their BIO-POSTERS together in class. All these should have been submitted. If you did not finish it in class, you should hand it in tomorrow completed!!

PEACE DAY SEPTEMBER 21st

Students got to watch a video in class on Peace Day and how it was started, and what it means today. They also were able to fill out and illustrate a Personal Commitment to PEACE.
During recess we were able to go out onto the field a create a Peace sign with all the 7th Grade students. I will upload the photo asap.

FUNDRAISER DAY!!

Today we assembled each class in the Multi-Purpose room and introduced the annul Hedrick Fundraiser. Please ask your child about this, they have each been given information about it. It will only run for two weeks!!
