Current Events Article #1

For the next two days students will be analyzing an article on Newsela (This great website allows students to adjust reading level to fit their needs). After reading the article, we will be completing a template to get the 'gist' of the article, and then students will be creating a written summary and response to the article.
We will be doing several of these Current Events articles over the year, each one being a formative assessment, with the last one in the 4th quarter being a summative.

FinishingTimelines

Today students finished their timelines in Google Drawings (see instructions on yesterdays post). They were also able to add in 5 world events along with their personal events, by accessing Wikipedia.
I also introduced the chart/graph they will be doing next Tuesday in Google Sheets. They should be prepared next week to make a graph or chart about their family.
Examples could be family members choices of favorite ice cream/cookie/pizza/movie; color of eyes/hair of family members; or ages of people living at home.

OPEN HOUSE!!!!!

It was great to meet so many parents last night at Open House. It was wonderful to meet all of you and see the support you displayed for your child's learning here at Hedrick.
Thanks!!!!

BIO TIMELINES

Today we learnt to create a timeline using Google Drawings. Students had to record 5 events that have been part of their own life on the timeline (ex: Birthdate, Started at Hedrick, First pet).
They also had to record 5 world events that have happened during their lifetime, that they consider to be important. To do this, they searched on Wikipedia (ex: type in Wikipedia 2016, search for an event). Then inserted the information into the timeline

These have been saved in their Google drive to access again, and work from any internet connected device.

If you need help on how to create a timeline in Google drawing... WATCH THIS!

Here is an example of Mr. Read's timeline. SAMPLE

Creating a LIFE MAP

Today students used Google Earth to create a LIFE MAP.
They learnt how to drop thumbtacks on different locations, and had to create a single sentence about why that location is important to them (They had to actually have been there... not  a dream destination).
Each student dropped 5 thumbtacks and then was able to print their map. This will be used next week to create a BIO-POSTER.
